China has intensified efforts to elevate the quality and modernization of its transport networks in 2023, investing a substantial 3.9 trillion yuan ($548.7 billion), according to the Ministry of Transport. Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng announced these developments at a press conference on Wednesday.
The significant investment led to the opening of 2,776 kilometers of high-speed railways and the construction or expansion of 7,000 kilometers of expressways throughout the year. Additionally, the nation added or improved 1,000 kilometers of shipping lanes, and the number of airports increased to 259, ensuring postal services reach all administrative villages.
Enhancing Transportation Services
Preliminary statistics reveal that freight volume reached 54.75 billion tonnes in 2023, marking an 8.1 percent year-on-year increase and a 16.9 percent rise compared to 2019. Personnel trips across regions totaled 61.25 billion, reflecting a 30.9 percent year-on-year increase and a slight 0.8 percent uptick from 2019 figures.
Advancing Smart and Green Transportation
China continues to lead globally in the scale of automated container terminals built and under construction. New energy vehicles now comprise 77.6 percent of urban public transportation vehicles, underscoring the nation’s commitment to green technology.
The country’s first domestically built large cruise ship, “Adora Magic City,” commenced operations on January 1, 2024. Moreover, the C919, China’s first domestically produced passenger jet, has officially entered commercial service, marking significant milestones in the nation’s transportation advancements.
