Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Sunday during the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Minister Wang emphasized China’s dedication to the WTO, stating that China will actively participate in WTO reforms and enhance the organization’s role in global economic governance. He expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with all parties to ensure the conference yields practical results, including resuming normal operations of the dispute settlement mechanism, formulating a work plan for agricultural negotiations, and addressing food security demands of the least developed countries.
Director-General Okonjo-Iweala commended China for its support of the WTO and the multilateral trading system. She appreciated China’s efforts to consider issues from the perspectives of all WTO members while safeguarding its own legitimate rights and interests. Okonjo-Iweala expressed hope that China would play an even more significant role in ensuring the success of the 13th Ministerial Conference.
The discussions between Wang and Okonjo-Iweala underscore the importance of cooperation among WTO members in tackling global trade challenges and promoting inclusive economic growth.
