Preserving Nature: Huang Cheng’s Commitment to Endangered Sea Turtles
As millions of people across China traveled home to celebrate the Spring Festival, Huang Cheng remained on the remote Qilianyu Islands in south China’s Hainan Province. A fisherman turned conservationist, Huang chose to spend the most important traditional festival of the year with a different kind of family—endangered green sea turtles.
Huang, who works at a marine life rescue center, has dedicated his life to protecting these majestic creatures. “The sea turtles need care and attention, especially during this time,” he said. “Leaving them unattended is not an option.”
This year, instead of making the journey back to his hometown, Huang’s family joined him on the island. Together, they embraced the festive spirit among the tranquil surroundings of the marine sanctuary. “Having my family here means the world to me,” Huang shared. “We can celebrate while also raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation.”
The Qilianyu Islands are home to a diverse range of marine life but face threats from environmental changes and human activity. Conservation efforts led by individuals like Huang are crucial in safeguarding the fragile ecosystem. His daily routine involves monitoring the health of sea turtles, cleaning their habitats, and educating visitors about the significance of preserving marine biodiversity.
Huang’s commitment reflects a growing movement in China toward environmental protection and sustainable practices. “Every small action counts,” he emphasized. “If we all contribute, we can ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the natural beauty that we have today.”
