Under the resounding theme of “Leaving No One Behind,” delegates from the Group of 77 and China convened in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, for the Third South Summit. This significant gathering of developing nations, the first in 19 years since the last summit in Doha, brought together leaders to address shared challenges and strengthen cooperation.
The Group of 77 (G77), the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries within the United Nations, seeks to promote collective economic interests and enhance joint negotiating capacity. While China is not an official member, it has consistently provided political support and financial contributions to the group, reinforcing solidarity with the Global South.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni emphasized the importance of the summit’s theme, stating that inclusive development cannot be achieved without addressing the unique challenges faced by countries in special situations. These include many nations on the African continent, least developed countries, those experiencing conflict, and those grappling with natural disasters.
China’s commitment to fostering a shared future for developing countries has been evident through initiatives like the high-quality Belt and Road Initiative, efforts to reform the international trade system, and support for United Nations reforms. As the largest economy among developing nations, China has played a pivotal role in advocating for fairer global systems that benefit all.
At the summit’s opening, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong reaffirmed China’s readiness to enhance practical cooperation and capacity-building with other developing countries. He highlighted the importance of unlocking growth potential and working together to overcome common challenges.
The Kampala summit aimed to bolster South-South cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and the digital economy. These focus areas align closely with China’s ongoing support for countries across the Global South, reflecting a mutual commitment to progress and prosperity.
