Beijing has made significant strides in ecological conservation, increasing its forest coverage to 44.9% in 2023, according to Beijing Mayor Yin Yong. Delivering the government work report at the annual session of Beijing’s legislative meeting on Sunday, Mayor Yin highlighted the city’s commitment to environmental improvement.

In 2023, the Chinese capital planted an additional 1,000 hectares (approximately 15,000 mu) of trees. This concerted greening effort has boosted the forest coverage rate from 38.6% in 2012 to the current 44.9%, earning Beijing the prestigious title of “National Forest City.”

The city also opened 60 new parks last year, including 10 suburban parks and 50 pocket parks and small green spaces, bringing the total number of parks in Beijing to 1,065. These green spaces provide residents and visitors with increased access to nature and recreational areas within the urban environment.

Environmental quality has also seen improvement. For three consecutive years, Beijing’s average concentration of PM2.5—fine particulate matter harmful to human health—has met national standards. In 2023, the PM2.5 concentration reached 32 micrograms per cubic meter, the second-lowest level since monitoring began. This improvement reflects ongoing efforts to reduce air pollution in the city.

“In 2024, Beijing will strive for the modernization of harmony between humanity and nature,” Mayor Yin stated, emphasizing the city’s dedication to sustainable development.
