São Paulo-based translator and PhD student Rud Eric Paixão is embarking on a literary journey to bring one of China's most celebrated classics, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, to Brazilian Portuguese readers. With degrees in history and Chinese language and literature, Rud combines his academic expertise and passion for Chinese culture in this ambitious translation project he started in 2021.
Rud's fascination with the epic novel stems from its rich tapestry of historical events, intricate strategies, and profound character developments. His favorite figures in the narrative are Cao Cao and Zhou Yu. Rud admires Cao Cao for his authenticity and believes he should be understood within the context of his own culture and era. He particularly highlights the chapter "The Hero of Brewing Wine," where Cao Cao's intelligence shines through his ability to assess who is worthy of great responsibility.
Regarding Zhou Yu, Rud feels that this character is often misunderstood and wronged in the tales of the Three Kingdoms. He points out that during the Battle of Chibi, many of Zhou Yu's accomplishments are erroneously credited to Zhuge Liang, overshadowing Zhou Yu's strategic brilliance.
Through his translation, Rud aims to convey the central themes of loyalty, justice, humaneness, and virtue that are vividly portrayed by various characters in the novel. He hopes that Brazilian readers will not only enjoy the thrilling stories but also gain insights into the cultural and moral values that have shaped Chinese history.
"Translating such a monumental work is both challenging and rewarding," Rud shares. "I want to bridge the gap between our cultures and allow Portuguese-speaking audiences to experience the depth and wisdom of this Chinese classic."
