Kenya’s ‘Chinese Girl’ Bridges Cultures with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Historical ties spanning several centuries come alive as Mwamaka Sharifu, affectionately known as Kenya’s ‘Chinese Girl’, embarks on a mission to bring Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to her homeland.

Nearly 20 years ago, Mwamaka traveled from Kenya to China to study TCM, inspired by the rich history and longstanding friendship between the two nations. Her journey led her to Taicang, Suzhou City, where she immersed herself in the ancient healing practices.

Now, she returns to Taicang seeking professional assistance and inspiration to open a TCM clinic in Kenya. “The opportunities brought by the Belt and Road Initiative have transformed my life,” she shares. “I hope to use what I’ve learned to benefit people in Kenya and strengthen the bonds between our countries.”

Mwamaka’s story reflects the deepening cultural and educational exchanges between China and Kenya. Her dream of integrating TCM into Kenyan healthcare symbolizes a new chapter in the enduring friendship between the two nations.
