China’s Diplomacy in 2023: Advocating Dialogue for Global Peace

This March, a remarkable development captured the world’s attention. Mediated by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed gratitude for China’s efforts. This successful mediation highlights the recognition and trust placed in China’s diplomatic policies in the Middle East.

China’s diplomacy emphasizes resolving conflicts through dialogue. This principle is particularly significant as the world witnesses prolonged crises, such as the Ukraine conflict and the devastating Israel-Palestine situation, both resulting in severe humanitarian disasters.

In February and November of this year, China released papers titled “China’s Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis” and “Position Paper of the People’s Republic of China on Resolving the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict.” Both documents advocate for peaceful dialogue, emphasizing that the interests of all relevant parties should be fully considered on the basis of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. They call for the restoration of regional peace through negotiations as soon as possible.

China is committed to seeking common ground while setting aside differences, choosing dialogue over confrontation, replacing coercion with consultation, and safeguarding common interests that transcend national boundaries. This approach is reflected in the growing trend of regional rapprochement and cooperation in the Middle East, such as the resumption of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Bahrain.
