Bingling Temple Grottoes Closed After 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Gansu

The Bingling Temple Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in Yongjing County, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, have been temporarily closed to the public following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck nearby Jishishan County.

The earthquake, which occurred approximately 80 kilometers from the grottoes, prompted local authorities to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of visitors and protect the historic site. Initial inspections report no damage to the grottoes themselves, but thorough assessments are currently underway to confirm the structural integrity of the ancient caves.

Carved into the cliffs along the north bank of the Yellow River during the Western Jin Dynasty (265-317), the Bingling Temple Grottoes comprise 183 niches housing 694 stone-carved statues, 82 clay sculptures, and around 900 square meters of murals. The site is renowned for its intricate artistry and historical significance, attracting scholars, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from around the globe.

Authorities have not announced when the site will reopen but assure the public that updates will be provided as soon as safety evaluations are completed. Visitors planning trips to the region are advised to stay informed through official channels and monitor local news outlets for further information.

This event underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage sites in seismically active regions and highlights the proactive steps taken by local officials to safeguard both the public and invaluable historical treasures.
