Global Guardians: Crafting Safety Amidst COVID-19 in Colombia

CÚCUTA, Colombia — Along the vibrant border between Colombia and Venezuela lies the city of Cúcuta, where two dedicated individuals are making a profound impact in their community’s fight against COVID-19. Beatríz Oquendo and Esteban Barrera, residents of this bustling city, have turned concern into action by producing much-needed protective suits for frontline workers.

Understanding the challenges faced by medics without proper protective gear, Oquendo and Barrera revisited a design used during the H1N1 outbreak. They adapted and improved the model to meet the current demands of the pandemic. Collaborating with local workshops, they initiated a nonstop production line of protective garments.

The fruits of their labor are delivered daily to medical professionals, police officers, and others who stand at the forefront of the crisis. “Every time we see people working in the suits we produced, we feel moved and relieved,” shared Oquendo. “The safety of people in Cúcuta is our greatest wish.”

Their initiative echoes a global sentiment of community-led efforts to combat the pandemic. In various parts of the world, including Asia, individuals and small groups have stepped forward to support overstretched health systems. Their actions highlight the universal desire to protect and uplift one another during unprecedented times.

Oquendo and Barrera’s story is a testament to the power of grassroots movements. It reminds us that compassion and ingenuity are vital tools in overcoming global health challenges. As communities worldwide navigate the impacts of COVID-19, such inspiring endeavors fuel hope and exemplify humanity’s collective resilience.
