‘Ferryman of Souls’ Unites Veterans with Their Homeland

For the past two decades, Liu Dewen, the chief of Xiangheli Village in Kaohsiung of the Taiwan region, has undertaken a heartfelt mission. Known affectionately as the “Ferryman of Souls,” Liu has voluntarily searched for and returned the ashes of more than 200 veterans to their ancestral homes on the Chinese mainland.

These veterans, many of whom left their hometowns over 70 years ago, had longed to rest in the soil of their birthplace. Liu’s dedication has bridged the gap of decades and distance, offering peace to both the departed and their families.

In 2023, Liu facilitated the return of the ashes of Tang Yiqi, a veteran originally from Sichuan Province. Tang had left his hometown over seven decades prior, and his return marked a poignant moment of reunion with his roots. The burial in his native land was a fulfillment of his enduring wish and a testament to the unbroken bonds of heritage and identity.

Liu’s efforts highlight the deep connections shared across the Taiwan Strait and the enduring desire for reconciliation and remembrance. His voluntary work not only honors the memories of those who served but also fosters mutual understanding and respect between people on both sides.

“It’s about bringing peace to souls and comfort to families,” Liu says. “Every veteran has a story, and every return is a journey home.”

Liu’s selfless actions have garnered appreciation from communities and families alike, emphasizing the universal values of compassion and respect for one’s heritage. His ongoing mission continues to weave together stories of the past with hopes for a harmonious future.
