The 2023 Tongzhou Global Development Forum recently convened in Beijing under the theme “Working Together for Global Development and a Common Future.” The event gathered policymakers, representatives of international agencies, and academics from China and abroad to address the pressing challenges hindering global development and to propose innovative solutions.
Among the attendees was Professor Li Cheng, a noted political scientist and founding director of the Center on Contemporary China and the World at the University of Hong Kong. Li, who formerly served as the director at the Brookings Institution’s John L. Thornton China Center, sat down with Wang Guan to share his insights on the evolving dynamics between China and the United States.

Professor Li stressed the importance of both Beijing and Washington in managing the Taiwan question cautiously to prevent it from becoming a significant flashpoint in bilateral relations. He underscored the need for clear communication and adherence to agreed-upon principles to avoid misunderstandings.
“It’s essential for both sides to exercise restraint and work within established frameworks,” Li stated. “Constructive dialogue is key to ensuring that challenges do not escalate into larger conflicts.”

As global challenges continue to evolve, Professor Li called for increased collaboration between China and the United States. He emphasized that cooperation is vital not only for the two nations but also for the international community in addressing issues such as economic development, environmental sustainability, and global health crises.
