Vietnam’s Durian Exports to the Chinese Mainland Soar Amidst Growing Demand

The 6th China International Import Expo is set to take place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, with Vietnam honored as one of the guest countries. This event underscores the strengthening economic ties between Vietnam and the Chinese mainland, especially in the agricultural sector.

Following the economic and trade agreement signed in 2022, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports have witnessed remarkable growth. Key products like durian, mango, dragon fruit, and bananas have enjoyed the highest export turnovers, signaling a thriving trade relationship.

Durian, often dubbed the “king of fruits,” has seen an unprecedented surge in popularity among Chinese consumers. In 2022, Vietnamese durian exports to the Chinese mainland skyrocketed, meeting the burgeoning demand for this unique and flavorful fruit.

To capture public sentiment, CGTN Stringer took to the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Shanghai, China, posing the question: “Can you guess how many Vietnamese durians were consumed in the Chinese mainland in 2022?” The responses varied, reflecting both surprise and enthusiasm over the growing consumption.

Additionally, in the first half of 2023, the Chinese mainland imported a significant quantity of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, further solidifying the agricultural partnership between the two nations. This trend not only boosts Vietnam’s economy but also provides Chinese consumers with a wider array of fresh produce options.

The upcoming expo in Shanghai serves as a platform to celebrate and enhance these trade relationships. With Vietnam showcasing its agricultural prowess, attendees can expect a focus on sustainable practices and quality products that cater to international markets.

The deepening ties in fruit and vegetable trade highlight the dynamic economic landscape of Asia, where regional cooperation leads to mutual growth and prosperity. As consumers in the Chinese mainland continue to embrace Vietnamese produce, the future looks promising for both countries.
