‘We Brace for Death’: Life in Gaza Amid Conflict

In the heart of Gaza, 45-year-old Hanaa Daoud faces a battle on two fronts. Suffering from asthma and pulmonary fibrosis, she relies on a breathing machine to survive. But as the Israel-Palestine conflict intensifies, access to electricity—and with it, the lifeline her breathing machine provides—becomes increasingly uncertain.

“Rockets fly above our heads, and we brace for death,” Daoud shares. “There’s absolutely no safe place in Gaza.”

With limited power supply, Daoud can only leave her home with her breathing device, unsure of when the battery might run out. The constant threat of violence compounds her health challenges, making every day a struggle for survival.

“We aspire to live like people in other Arab countries,” she says, her voice filled with longing. “With safety and a normal life, free from a war every couple of years.”

Daoud’s story reflects the broader plight of Gaza’s residents—people striving for normalcy amid chaos. The lack of basic necessities, such as consistent electricity and medical care, exacerbates the hardships brought on by the ongoing conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the resilience of Gaza’s people remains a poignant reminder of the human cost of prolonged conflict. Their stories underscore the urgent need for lasting peace and stability in the region.
