As violence escalates in the Middle East, Palestinian writer and activist Tara Alami, based in Montreal, Canada, speaks out about the deep grief and anger felt by Palestinians in exile. With over 2,700 Palestinians, including more than 1,000 children, killed in the recent nine days of conflict, Alami emphasizes the urgent need for liberation and decolonization.
“Every Palestinian in exile is feeling immense grief and anger,” Alami shared. “We want an end to the continuation of this ongoing nightmare, this ongoing catastrophe against Palestinians.”
Alami highlights the plight of millions of Palestinians living in exile, many of whom are refugees unable to return to their homeland. She believes that the only solution is the liberation of Palestinian people from settler colonialism and imperialist intervention.
“We want liberation, we want decolonization, and we want to return to our lands,” she said. “We want an end to the theft of our land, we want an end to the murder of our people.”
Despite the dire circumstances, Alami holds onto hope for the future. “Yes, of course, we have hope. Our grandparents had hope when they were exiled in 1948. Our parents have hope, and we also have hope,” she expressed. “We have to have hope that we will achieve liberation within our lifetime.”
Alami’s sentiments reflect a broader yearning among Palestinians worldwide for peace, justice, and the right to return to their homeland. As the conflict continues, voices like hers shed light on the human impact and the aspirations for a lasting resolution.
