Empowered by the Nile: Bless’s Journey with Uganda’s Karuma Dam

On the banks of the Nile River in Uganda’s Kiryandongo District, the Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station stands as a beacon of progress and hope. Among those whose lives have been transformed by this monumental project is Ayebazibwe Bless, a local who found more than just a job amidst the turbines and generators.

Financed by the China Import and Export Bank, the Karuma Power Station is Uganda’s largest hydropower facility. It not only brings electricity to millions but also fuels stories of personal growth and connection. For Bless, working with the EPC contractors at Karuma offered an opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience and forge vital connections within the engineering community.

“Working here has changed my life,” Bless shared. “I’ve learned so much and met so many incredible people.”

Among those incredible people was Nyamungu Monica, whom Bless met on the project site. Their shared journey led to love, marriage, and the start of a family—a personal testament to how the Karuma project is impacting lives beyond the infrastructure.

The Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station symbolizes more than just industrial advancement; it represents a foundation for sustainable development for generations of Ugandans. By harnessing the power of the Nile, the project is lighting up homes, empowering communities, and fostering human connections.

“This dam isn’t just about electricity,” Bless emphasized. “It’s about building futures.”

Rising with Pride, a new documentary series, captures these human stories intertwined with grand initiatives. Directed and co-produced by filmmakers from China and Uganda, the series marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It delves into how projects like Karuma are connecting people and enriching lives.

Set to be broadcast on Ugandan television stations Urban Television and Bukedde TV, the documentary offers a poignant look at the personal impacts of global cooperation.

The Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station and stories like Bless’s underscore the profound changes unfolding across Uganda and the broader region, highlighting the human spirit at the heart of development.
