China witnessed a remarkable travel and consumption frenzy during the eight-day Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday. According to the Chinese Ministry of Transport, over 160 million passenger trips were made via the country’s railway network between September 27 and October 6. On September 29 alone, a record-breaking 20.09 million railway passenger trips were recorded.
Data from a leading tourism platform indicates that outbound travel orders increased by more than eight times compared to the previous year during the holiday week, highlighting a significant rebound in international travel among Chinese residents.
In Hong Kong and Shanghai, travelers shared their plans and perspectives on the holiday. Many expressed a preference for outbound travel or exploring niche destinations during longer vacations. “For this extended break, I’m excited to visit a new country and immerse myself in a different culture,” said one traveler in Shanghai.
There is a noticeable shift in travel preferences, with more people opting to upgrade their tourism experiences and focus on relaxation rather than the previously popular budget or ‘special-forces-style’ travel. Travelers are seeking higher-quality services and more leisurely itineraries to make the most of their journeys.
This surge in travel reflects China’s dynamic and evolving tourism landscape, offering insights for businesses and investors in the sector, as well as providing rich experiences for global travelers and cultural enthusiasts exploring the region.
