Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema concluded a significant six-day state visit to China, marking a new chapter in China-Zambia relations. The two nations elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, aiming to boost Zambia’s development and accelerate its industrialization efforts.
During his visit, President Hichilema toured several key regions in China, including Shenzhen, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Beijing. In Shenzhen, he witnessed the city’s rapid economic growth and innovative technological advancements, reflecting China’s transformation over the past decades. The visit to the Jinggangshan Red Army Base in Jiangxi Province offered insights into China’s revolutionary history and its journey towards modernization.
In Fujian Province’s city of Fu’an, President Hichilema observed firsthand the successful outcomes of China’s poverty alleviation programs. These initiatives have lifted millions out of poverty, providing valuable lessons for Zambia’s own development strategies. The experiences gathered from these regions, as President Hichilema described, helped him put together “the pieces of the puzzle” in understanding China’s development model.
A highlight of the visit was President Hichilema’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. The leaders discussed deepening cooperation under the frameworks of the Belt and Road Initiative and President Xi’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. President Hichilema expressed optimism that these collaborations would bring substantial benefits to Zambia and enhance its role in regional and international affairs.
“China’s support has been instrumental in our quest for industrialization and economic growth,” President Hichilema stated. “The strengthened partnership will not only boost Zambia’s development but also give the African continent a stronger voice on the global stage.”
The upgraded partnership is expected to facilitate increased investment in Zambia’s infrastructure, mining, agriculture, and technology sectors. It also aims to promote cultural exchanges and enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Zambia.
Analysts view this development as a positive step for Africa-China relations, signaling a commitment to collaborative growth and shared prosperity. The cooperation aligns with the broader goals of fostering sustainable development and addressing global challenges through collective action.
