Senegal’s President Macky Sall Highlights AU’s G20 Membership and China-Africa Cooperation

Africa has taken a significant step onto the global stage with the African Union’s (AU) full membership in the G20, representing over one billion people. This milestone comes shortly after the 15th BRICS Summit and the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, events that have solidified connections among nations in the Global South and reinforced China’s commitment to Africa’s development.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Wang Guan, Senegalese President Macky Sall discussed the deepening ties between China and Africa and the evolving role of the continent in international affairs. President Sall emphasized China’s ‘win-win’ approach, noting that it brings tangible and concrete results on the ground in Africa.

Contrary to the ‘debt trap’ narrative often portrayed by Western critics, President Sall highlighted that China has been attentive to Africa’s infrastructure priorities. He praised China’s efforts in supporting projects that align with the continent’s developmental needs, contributing positively to African economies.

As the previous chairperson of the African Union, President Sall remarked on the unfolding new paradigm in global relations, asserting that Africa should have a greater voice in international organizations. He pointed to the recent inclusion of the AU in the G20 and the expansion of BRICS as expressions of this shift toward a more inclusive global governance structure.

‘The move toward BRICS and the expansion of the bloc signify a new era for Africa,’ President Sall stated. ‘It reflects our continent’s aspirations to play a more substantial role on the global stage and partner with nations that respect our priorities and sovereignty.’

President Sall’s insights underscore the growing importance of Africa in global affairs and highlight the continent’s strategic partnerships, particularly with China. As Africa gains momentum in international forums, its collaboration with China is poised to foster mutual growth and contribute to a more balanced global landscape.
