Beijing’s Tsinghua University has become the academic home for Dutch student Kelson Teo, who journeyed from the Netherlands to immerse himself in China’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage. As a law student, Teo is not only delving into legal studies but is also captivated by the complexities and beauty of the Chinese language.
“The Chinese language is a fascinating tapestry that weaves together phonetic and ideographic elements,” Teo shared. “Unlike Western languages that primarily rely on phonetics, Chinese characters carry meanings within their very structure, offering a different logic and historical depth.”
Teo noted the unique tonal nature of spoken Chinese, where tones can entirely change the meaning of a word. “It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding to master these nuances,” he said.
He also expressed admiration for the diversity found within China’s numerous dialects. “Despite sharing a common written language, the spoken dialects vary greatly across regions,” Teo observed. “This diversity adds layers to the culture and reflects the vastness of China’s history.”
Beyond language, Teo is enamored with Chinese architecture, finding inspiration in both ancient structures and modern designs that blend tradition with innovation.
Looking ahead, Teo hopes to see increased cultural exchanges between China and the Netherlands. “By understanding each other’s languages and cultures, we can foster stronger ties and mutual respect,” he stated.
