Laishui County, Hebei Province—From July 29 to August 1, torrential rains battered Laishui County in north China’s Hebei Province, causing the water levels of rivers like the Juma River, Yishui River, and Xiaoxi River to surge dramatically. The mountainous regions were hit particularly hard, leaving communities devastated by floods.
Amidst the aftermath, American vlogger Amber, who has called China home for nearly eight years, felt compelled to act. Alongside her husband, she traveled to Laishui County to assess the situation and offer assistance to those affected by the disaster.
“When we arrived, there was no power, water, or internet,” Amber recounted. “But what struck me most was not the devastation, but the overwhelming sense of community and solidarity.”
She witnessed countless rescue teams from neighboring cities pouring into Laishui. Volunteers from all walks of life joined hands to distribute supplies, clear debris, and provide support to displaced residents. “It was incredible to see how quickly everyone mobilized,” Amber said. “The unity of the Chinese people in times of crisis is truly inspiring.”
Despite the challenging conditions, Amber and her husband joined local efforts, assisting with relief distribution and documenting the resilience of the community. “People who had lost so much were still offering help to others,” she observed. “Their strength and compassion moved me deeply.”
Amber’s experience in Laishui has reinforced her appreciation for the spirit of the Chinese people. “Living here for so long, I’ve grown to love this country,” she shared. “But seeing everyone come together like this—it’s something I’ll never forget.”
As recovery efforts continue, Amber hopes to share her story widely, highlighting not just the challenges faced but also the remarkable unity demonstrated in the face of adversity. “I want the world to see the humanity and kindness that thrives here,” she said. “It’s a testament to the enduring strength of community.”
