An Italian Photographer Captures Resilience Amid Lockdown

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, stories of resilience and hope emerged from every corner of the world. In Bologna, Italy, a cinema owner became a symbol of steadfast determination. With theaters closed and streets emptied, he continued his daily routine: entering his silent cinema and screening films to an audience of one—himself. This simple act was a powerful assertion that ordinary life could persist despite unprecedented challenges.

Italian photographer Andrea Savorani Neri captured this poignant moment among many others during his time in lockdown Italy. Originally planning a 15-day project in April, Neri found himself unexpectedly confined when flights were canceled and nationwide restrictions were imposed. Seizing the opportunity, he turned his lens toward the everyday heroes and the profound quietude enveloping the city of Bologna.

Neri’s work chronicled the experiences of medical professionals on the front lines, as well as ordinary individuals adapting to a new reality. Through his photography, he shed light on the shared human experience of navigating a pandemic—a narrative that resonates globally, including with audiences across Asia who faced similar trials.

Reflecting on his journey, Neri describes 2020 as “one of the most intense years” of his professional life. His hope for the coming year is to explore stories beyond the pandemic, continuing to document the indomitable spirit of people worldwide. His images serve as a reminder of our collective resilience and the universal desire to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst chaos.
