Beijing — When Erlinda Fadera Basilio, former Philippine ambassador to China, concluded her tenure in Beijing, she returned home with nearly 300 boxes filled with mementos. From elegant ceramic vases and intricate Chinese embroidery to Tai Chi books and treasured photo albums, each item encapsulates a chapter of her profound journey in China.
As she unpacks these boxes, memories flood back, reminding her of the deep friendships and cultural ties she forged during her time in the country. “Every piece holds a story, a connection to the wonderful people I met,” Basilio reflects.
Among her closest friends is Bai Tian, who was the Philippines’ desk officer at China’s Foreign Ministry during her service. In 2016, when Basilio was hospitalized for pneumonia, Bai visited her every day for three weeks. “I’ve never seen a person so dedicated and so loving to a friend like me,” she said, touched by his unwavering support.
The attentive care from the medical staff and the kindness of her Chinese friends left an indelible mark on her heart. Under their care, she gradually recovered, deeply moved by the compassion she experienced. “It wasn’t just medical attention; it was genuine concern and friendship,” Basilio shared.
Basilio’s story is a testament to the strong bonds that can form between nations through individual relationships. Her collection of memories serves not only as personal keepsakes but also as symbols of the enduring friendship between the Philippines and China.
