Bullfighting Industry Faces Unprecedented Challenges Amid COVID-19 Lockdowns

As the world grapples with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, traditional industries face unprecedented challenges. Victorino Martin, a renowned breeder of fighting bulls, witnesses the devastating impact firsthand.

“The bullfighting season lasts from March 15 to October 15,” Martin explains. “In the offseason, we have no income.”

The pandemic has led to the cancellation of more than 500 bullfights, representing over 90% of the total events. This sudden halt has hit the industry hard.

“The production cost of a bull is estimated at 5,000 euros, but we only earn 500 euros by selling the meat,” Martin shares. “Some of my colleagues are taking their bulls to the slaughterhouse. This is the worst period I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

Bullfighters and breeders alike are worried as they face financial hardships with no income in sight. Martin believes that the best solution is to return to normal life as soon as possible.
