ICE Agents Deployed to Airports Amid Prolonged DHS Shutdown

U.S. airports face escalating security challenges as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are now being deployed to assist with checkpoint operations during an ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding shutdown, now in its fifth week. The move comes amid staffing shortages at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), where unpaid officers have increasingly quit or called in sick.

Tom Homan, the White House's chief border official, confirmed on March 22 that ICE personnel will support security at airport entrances and exits to alleviate pressure on TSA teams. Long lines at major hubs like Atlanta and Los Angeles have drawn public frustration, with DHS attributing the crisis to congressional Democrats' refusal to pass a funding bill. "This chaos is a direct result of the Democrats' shutdown," the department stated on social media.

Democrats, however, accuse Republicans of prolonging the standoff. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the ICE deployment as a distraction, urging Republicans to prioritize backpay for TSA workers. The Senate rejected the latest DHS funding proposal on March 20, leaving critical agencies like the Coast Guard and FEMA under strain. With no resolution in sight, travelers are advised to expect extended wait times through the spring travel season.
