Inside Self-Quarantine: A Personal Account After COVID-19 Exposure in Milan

It all started after I attended a press conference held by the Lombardy regional government in Milan. Two days later, we were informed that one of the other attendees had tested positive for COVID-19.

Following the announcement, Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana, who was also present at the meeting, placed himself in a two-week self-isolation out of “concern for his colleagues.”

As news spread, I found myself grappling with the reality of entering self-quarantine. The prospect was daunting—two weeks confined to my home, uncertain about my health and the implications for those around me.

Adjusting to this new normal required significant changes. Daily routines had to be adapted, work moved entirely online, and social interactions limited to virtual connections. It was a period of reflection, not only on personal well-being but also on the collective responsibility we share in preventing the spread of the virus.

Throughout the isolation, I remained vigilant for any symptoms, maintaining regular communication with healthcare professionals. Fortunately, I did not develop any signs of illness. The experience underscored the importance of precautionary measures and the impact individual actions have on public health.

Emerging from quarantine, I carried with me a heightened awareness of the intricate web of connections that define our communities. The pandemic has shown that vigilance and solidarity are essential in navigating such unprecedented times.
