Palestine’s First Amputee Football Team Sets Sights on World Cup

In a groundbreaking development coinciding with the International Day for People with Disabilities on December 3, Palestine launched its first national amputee football team in Gaza. Supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the team comprises 20 young Palestinians who have lost limbs either due to past conflicts or accidents.

Training with crutches and prosthetic legs at a stadium in Gaza City, these athletes are not only overcoming physical challenges but also setting their ambitions high. They aspire to represent Palestine on the global stage at the Amputee Football World Cup next year.

Simon Baker, a consultant for the ICRC and an advocate for amputee sports, has been instrumental in guiding the team. Speaking about the initiative, he emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for amputees to participate in sports, fostering both physical rehabilitation and social inclusion.

Among the players is Hassan Karim, whose determination shines through his words: “I have dreams and ambitions, and my goal is to represent Palestine in international forums.” For Hassan and his teammates, football is not just a game; it’s a platform to challenge perceptions and inspire others facing similar challenges.

The establishment of the team marks a significant step towards inclusivity in sports within the region. It also reflects a broader movement to empower individuals with disabilities, promoting their rights and highlighting their capabilities.

As the team prepares for potential international competitions, they embody the spirit of resilience and hope. Their journey is a testament to what can be achieved with support, dedication, and unwavering ambition.
