Dejan Velimirovic, a 35-year-old programmer from Serbia, was among the country’s first-known COVID-19 patients. Believing he contracted the virus at a farewell party on February 29, his condition deteriorated rapidly despite his youth and lack of chronic illnesses. “He was lying in bed for about a week before he went to the hospital; he didn’t get up at all,” recalls his partner, Valentina.

Valentina stood by Dejan throughout his harrowing ordeal. “It was a frightening time, but our love gave us strength,” she shares. Dejan’s battle with the virus was fierce, but with medical care and Valentina’s unwavering support, he began to recover.
