Toronto Small Businesses Battle Survival Amid Second COVID-19 Wave

Toronto has issued a mandatory lockdown amid a second wave of COVID-19 infections, leaving small local businesses scrambling to survive. Astoria Kebab House, established in the 1970s and renowned as one of the most famous Greek restaurants in the city, is one such establishment facing unprecedented challenges.

According to general manager Angelo Koutis, the restaurant’s business has decreased by 70-80 percent due to the prohibition of dine-in services. “To save on operational costs, we’ve had to reduce our number of employees,” Koutis explained. Despite assistance from the Toronto government in the form of subsidies and relief on utilities and property taxes, staying afloat remains a daunting task. “It’s still not easy under the pandemic,” he added.

The struggles of Astoria Kebab House reflect a broader trend affecting small businesses throughout Toronto. As the pandemic continues to impact daily life and economic activity, many enterprises are seeking ways to adapt and persevere in uncertain times.
