Yangtze Finless Porpoise Makes a Comeback in Hubei’s Waters

The Yangtze finless porpoise, once critically endangered due to overfishing and pollution in the Yangtze River, is making a remarkable comeback in Hubei Province. Local photographer Yang He has been observing the gradual return of these playful creatures to their natural habitat, signaling a positive shift in the river’s ecosystem.

For years, the finless porpoise population declined sharply as industrial activities and excessive fishing practices degraded the river’s water quality and depleted its resources. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, authorities implemented stringent environmental policies aimed at restoring the Yangtze River’s health. Measures included restricting overfishing, enforcing pollution controls, and establishing protected areas for wildlife conservation.

Yang He, who has spent years documenting the natural beauty of Hubei, has witnessed firsthand the impact of these conservation efforts. “Seeing the porpoises return is a testament to the success of the environmental policies,” he says. “They are sensitive creatures, and their presence indicates a cleaner, healthier river.”

He shares that the best spots for observing the finless porpoises are along quieter stretches of the river, where human activity is minimal. Early morning and dusk are prime times to catch glimpses of them surfacing and playing in the water. Yang He’s photographs not only highlight the porpoises’ reappearance but also raise awareness about the importance of preserving their habitat.

The return of the Yangtze finless porpoise is a beacon of hope for conservationists and local communities alike. It reflects the positive outcomes that can be achieved when environmental preservation becomes a priority. As Hubei Province continues to balance development with ecological responsibility, the resurgence of this iconic species serves as an inspiring example of nature’s resilience.
