NAIROBI—For single mother Faith Methu, the whistle of the train between Mombasa and Nairobi is more than just a sound; it's a beacon of hope that has transformed her life.
Five years ago, the opening of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) marked a new era for Kenya's transportation network. The 500-kilometer line has reshaped the daily lives of millions, including Faith, who was facing the challenges of raising her six-year-old daughter alone after separating from her husband.
In search of better employment opportunities, Faith relocated to Nairobi, leaving her daughter in Mombasa. The distance strained their bond, with logistical hurdles making visits rare and emotionally taxing. "The journey used to be long and unpredictable," Faith recalls. "It was hard being away from my daughter, not knowing when I could see her next."
However, the inauguration of the SGR in 2017 changed everything. The modern, reliable train service reduced travel time between the two cities from over 12 hours by road to just four and a half hours by rail. "Now, I can see my daughter every weekend," Faith says with a smile. "The train is safe, punctual, and affordable. It has brought us back together."
The SGR has not only reconnected families but also boosted economic activities along its route. Businesses have flourished due to improved logistics, fostering growth and opportunities in both urban and rural areas. For Faith, the railway has been a lifeline, allowing her to maintain a stable job in Nairobi while staying connected with her family in Mombasa.
"It's more than a train," she emphasizes. "It's a bridge that has reunited us and given me hope for a better future."
