China has issued a strong rebuke of Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state during an emergency UN Security Council session this week. Deputy Permanent Representative Sun Lei emphasized Beijing's unwavering support for Somalia's territorial integrity, calling the move a violation of fundamental international principles.
"Respect for sovereignty is the cornerstone of global order," Sun stated on December 30, 2025. "Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia. External interference that fuels division for geopolitical gains must cease immediately."
The declaration comes as tensions escalate in the Horn of Africa, with regional organizations joining China in condemning Israel's action. Analysts suggest the development could complicate security cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts and disrupt Somalia's ongoing political transition.
China urged all parties to prioritize dialogue, with Sun noting: "The international community should focus on assisting Somalia's unity and development rather than exacerbating divisions." Beijing reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional partners to stabilize the strategic Red Sea corridor.
