Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attack Amid Stalled Peace Talks

Russia has accused Ukraine of launching a drone strike targeting President Vladimir Putin's residence in Novgorod, escalating tensions during fragile peace negotiations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed on December 29 that 91 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight, calling the incident "state terrorism" and vowing retaliation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied involvement, calling the allegations a "round of lies" meant to justify future Russian attacks on Kyiv. The accusations come as U.S.-mediated talks show tentative progress, with former President Donald Trump describing Sunday's discussions with Zelenskyy as bringing parties "very close" to an agreement.

Key sticking points remain unresolved, including control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the status of Donbas territories. While Russia demands Ukrainian withdrawal from parts of Donetsk, Kyiv insists on maintaining current front lines as ceasefire boundaries.

Trump confirmed discussing the drone incident with Putin, stating both leaders sought to resolve "thorny" issues blocking a peace deal. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged international condemnation of Russia's claims, warning they could presage new attacks on government buildings in the capital.
