China’s Xuelong Icebreaker Resupplies Antarctic Qinling Station in 2025 Mission

China Expands Polar Research Capabilities

China's icebreaker Xuelong has commenced critical resupply operations at Qinling Station, marking a significant milestone in the country's 42nd Antarctic scientific expedition. As of December 30, 2025, the vessel is unloading 1,400 tonnes of essential supplies through a coordinated maritime operation expected to last five days.

Expedition leader Wei Fuhai confirmed the cargo includes advanced scientific equipment, fuel reserves, and infrastructure materials to support ongoing research at China's largest Antarctic facility. The station, which became operational in February 2024, now serves as a hub for 80 researchers studying the Ross Sea ecosystem.

Strategic Scientific Operations

While barges transport supplies ashore, helicopters are conducting aerial surveys to support environmental monitoring programs. Concurrent marine surveys by Xuelong aim to collect crucial data on Southern Ocean currents and marine biodiversity.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has prioritized upgrading Qinling Station's research infrastructure this year, with new communication networks and laboratory facilities currently under development. These enhancements position the station as a key player in international climate change research initiatives.
