Nanjing, China — Every week, French rail transit engineer Romain Sevestre boards the monorail train he helped design, journeying between his home in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, and his workplace in Wuhu City, Anhui Province. As the scenery flashes by, he’s reminded of China’s rapid transformation over the past 16 years—a change he’s not only witnessed but also contributed to.
Romain’s journey in China began over a decade and a half ago. Drawn by the burgeoning opportunities in engineering, he immersed himself in projects that would shape the nation’s transportation infrastructure. “Watching the cities evolve and knowing I’ve played a part in it is incredibly fulfilling,” he says.
Beyond his weekly commute, Romain frequently travels across China via high-speed trains—a testament to the country’s advancements in rail technology. These journeys often lead him to marathons and triathlons, blending his passion for sports with his appreciation for China’s diverse landscapes. “Each city offers a new adventure and a chance to connect with different communities,” Romain notes.
After work, he enjoys the company of his Chinese colleagues, exploring local cuisine and culture. These friendships have deepened his connection to China. “Making friends here has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. They’ve helped me understand the culture on a much deeper level,” he shares.
Reflecting on his experiences, Romain expresses a profound fondness for his adopted home. “China is a place of endless possibilities. The pace of development is unmatched, and being part of this journey is something I cherish every day.”
