Palestine Condemns Israel’s New West Bank Settlements as ‘Dangerous Step’

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has denounced Israel's approval of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank this week, calling it a "dangerous step" designed to consolidate control over Palestinian territories. The ministry stated the move perpetuates "policies of apartheid," obstructs Palestinian self-determination, and erodes prospects for regional stability.

Escalating Tensions

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich confirmed on Sunday that the security cabinet authorized the settlements, part of a three-year effort to legalize or approve 69 such developments. Smotrich framed the decision as a measure to strengthen Jewish communities in the West Bank and counter Palestinian statehood aspirations.

International Condemnation

The approvals, accelerated under Israel's current right-wing government, have drawn widespread criticism. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned earlier this month that settlement expansion fuels tensions, restricts Palestinian land access, and jeopardizes the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state. Most nations consider the settlements illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

Historical Context

Israel has occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war. Palestinian authorities argue the latest settlements further fragment territorial continuity, a key requirement for any future independent state.
