China’s Bio-Manufacturing Industry Booms in 14th Five-Year Plan

China's bio-manufacturing sector has achieved transformative growth during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reporting breakthroughs in production capacity, technological innovation, and enterprise development. The industry's total output reached 1.1 trillion yuan ($156.2 billion), cementing its position as a global leader in biotechnology applications.

Key achievements include China producing over 70% of the world's bio-fermentation products, while pharmaceutical and food additive subsectors each surpassed 400 billion yuan in annual output. The country now accounts for more than 20% of global bio-manufacturing patent applications, supported by new national laboratories and industrial innovation platforms.

Technological milestones include the deployment of domestically developed high-throughput gene sequencers and industrial-scale fermenters. The sector has cultivated multiple enterprises exceeding 10 billion yuan in annual revenue, alongside specialized 'little giant' firms driving niche innovations.

Regional development initiatives have created nearly 40 pilot production platforms and advanced incubators nationwide. As the 14th Five-Year Plan concludes this year, industry analysts anticipate continued expansion under China's next-phase development strategies.
