Missing Black-necked Crane Chicks: A Photographer’s Quest in Qinghai

In the rugged landscapes of Nyanpo Yuzee, nestled in Golog Prefecture of northwest China’s Qinghai Province, 29-year-old wildlife photographer Choegyab embarked on a mission with his younger brother. Their goal was to capture the intimate moment of black-necked crane eggs hatching by setting up an infrared camera near a nest.

The black-necked crane, revered in Tibetan culture and listed as a vulnerable species, is known for its elusive nature and high-altitude habitats. Capturing their hatching process on camera would not only be a personal achievement for the brothers but also contribute valuable data for wildlife conservation efforts.

However, upon returning to the nesting site, the brothers were met with an unexpected situation—the crane chicks were nowhere to be found. The eggs had hatched, but the chicks had vanished without a trace.

Confounded by the disappearance, the brothers began to investigate. Did predators claim the chicks? Did environmental factors force the cranes to relocate? The mystery prompted a deeper exploration into the challenges faced by wildlife in the region.

“We were excited to witness and document a crucial moment in the life cycle of these majestic birds,” said Choegyab. “But now, we’re concerned about what happened to the chicks.”

Their quest highlights the delicate balance between wildlife and the changing environment in Qinghai Province. Factors such as climate change, human encroachment, and natural predators all play roles in the survival of species like the black-necked crane.

The story of the missing crane chicks underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts and raises awareness about the challenges faced by wildlife in Asia’s high-altitude regions.

As the brothers continue their search for answers, their dedication serves as a reminder of the vital role local communities and individuals play in wildlife preservation.
