Ex-South Korean Leader Accused of Provoking DPRK for Power Grab

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol allegedly attempted to incite military aggression from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to justify declaring martial law in December 2024 and suppress political rivals, according to a special prosecutor’s report released on December 15, 2025. The explosive claims follow a six-month investigation into what prosecutors describe as a “grave threat” to national stability.

Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok announced indictments against 24 individuals, including Yoon and five former cabinet members, on charges of insurrection. The probe alleges that Yoon’s administration sought to fabricate a security crisis to consolidate power and neutralize opposition figures during his tenure. While the indictment marks a significant escalation in South Korea’s political reckoning, analysts caution that the case could further polarize public opinion ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections.

The revelations have drawn sharp reactions across Asia, with regional security experts warning of potential ripple effects on cross-border relations. The DPRK has not yet commented on the allegations.
