China Reaffirms Sovereignty Over Taiwan Amid U.S. Policy Shift

China's Foreign Ministry has reiterated its firm stance on the Taiwan question following the release of a new U.S. national security strategy document. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized during Monday's press briefing that resolving Taiwan-related issues remains an internal affair for China, warning against external interference.

"The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations," Guo stated, responding to questions about recent developments in U.S. policy. The comments come as cross-strait relations remain a focal point in Asian geopolitics this December.

Chinese officials urged Washington to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and honor commitments made in previous bilateral agreements. "We call on the U.S. side to approach the Taiwan question with extra prudence and cease support for separatist forces," Guo added, referencing recent reports of potential military cooperation between U.S. contractors and the island of Taiwan.

Analysts suggest this exchange highlights growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait as 2025 draws to a close, with regional stability remaining crucial for international trade routes and technology supply chains. The Chinese mainland's position aligns with its longstanding policy of peaceful reunification while maintaining military readiness against what it perceives as separatist activities.
