Xinjiang Forum Boosts Central Asia Trade Ties in 2025

The Tianshan Forum for Central Asia Economic Cooperation opened today in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bringing together policymakers and business leaders to strengthen regional connectivity. Over 300 delegates from Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) member countries are attending the two-day event focused on trade, energy, and digital infrastructure development.

Bridging Policy and Practice

Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo'an emphasized CAREC's growing influence in his opening address, stating: 'Our cooperation must evolve to deliver tangible benefits for all member economies.' The forum marks a milestone for the CAREC Institute, which has trained over 2,000 officials since establishing its Urumqi headquarters in 2015.

New Regional Initiatives

Participants witnessed the launch of a Central Asia fiscal cooperation research center, a joint project between the CAREC Institute and Xinjiang's finance department. Pakistan's Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted successful cross-border projects while advocating for expanded technological collaboration.

Trade Corridor Momentum

With China-Central Asia trade reaching $94.8 billion last year, Xinjiang continues solidifying its position as a Belt and Road hub. The forum comes as regional governments seek to capitalize on new transport routes and energy networks established since the landmark 2023 China-Central Asia Summit.
