China’s Civil Service Exam Sees Record Interest After Age Cap Reform

China's national civil service examination concluded on November 30, 2025, marking its first administration since raising eligibility age limits in a bid to diversify public sector recruitment. A staggering 3.7 million candidates competed for approximately 37,800 positions across central authorities and regional branches this year, translating to 98 applicants per vacancy.

The 2025 reforms extended maximum application ages to 38 for general candidates and 43 for holders of advanced degrees, dismantling the long-standing '35-year ceiling' that previously barred older professionals from public service opportunities. Authorities reserved 70% of positions for recent college graduates, balancing youth employment priorities with experience integration.

This year's record participation reflects shifting labor market dynamics as China addresses workforce aging and skills realignment. The expanded age parameters enable mid-career professionals to transition into governance roles while maintaining opportunities for new graduates entering public service.
