China Summons Japanese Envoy Over Taiwan Remarks

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Japan’s ambassador to Beijing on Thursday, issuing a stern rebuke over recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan. The diplomatic escalation underscores heightened sensitivities in cross-strait relations as regional tensions persist.

Takaichi asserted last week that any use of force by the Chinese mainland toward Taiwan could create a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, aligning her remarks with Tokyo’s official stance during Diet deliberations. Sun condemned the statement as a “direct provocation” violating the one-China principle and post-WWII norms, emphasizing that Taiwan remains “at the core of China’s core interests.”

The vice minister warned that such rhetoric constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs and risks destabilizing Asia-Pacific security frameworks. Analysts note this exchange occurs amid ongoing debates about Japan’s security posture this year, with Beijing urging Tokyo to strictly adhere to historical bilateral agreements.
