China Urges Japan to Halt Support for Taiwan Separatism

China has called on Japan to cease sending “wrong signals” to advocates of Taiwan separatism, emphasizing the critical importance of the Taiwan question to bilateral relations. The appeal came after Japan conferred an order on Hsieh Chang-ting, a former representative of the Taiwan region in Japan, drawing sharp criticism from Beijing.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Wednesday that the move violated Japan’s commitments under the one-China principle, which forms the political foundation of China-Japan ties. “The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests and a red line that must not be crossed,” Guo asserted during a press briefing.

The spokesperson highlighted 2025’s dual historical significance: the 80th anniversary of both the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and Taiwan’s restoration to China. He urged Japan to reflect on its wartime responsibilities and adhere to the principles outlined in the four foundational bilateral documents.

This development underscores ongoing tensions in cross-strait relations, with Beijing reiterating its stance against any actions perceived as endorsing Taiwan’s independence. Analysts suggest Japan’s latest move could strain economic and diplomatic cooperation between Asia’s two largest economies amid broader regional security concerns.
