South Korea's industrial powerhouse Pohang is rewriting its economic blueprint this year, transitioning from decades of steel dominance to cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) materials and maritime tourism. The coastal city in North Gyeongsang Province, home to steel giant POSCO, now aims to become Asia's battery materials hub by 2025.
From Blast Furnaces to Battery Labs
Local authorities recently unveiled a $1.2 billion innovation district focused on artificial graphite anode production and biomaterial development. This strategic shift comes as global EV demand surges, with South Korea positioning itself as a key battery supplier to automakers worldwide.
Coastal Transformation
Simultaneously, Pohang is developing marine tourism infrastructure along its 52km coastline, including underwater observatories and cultural complexes. The dual strategy seeks to balance industrial modernization with sustainable growth, creating 8,000 new jobs this year alone.
