As digital platforms dominate global communication, celebrated Chinese writer Zhao Lihong has reaffirmed literature’s enduring significance after receiving the 2025 Premio Montale Fuori di Casa, one of Italy’s most prestigious literary honors. The award recognizes his lifelong dedication to storytelling that bridges cultures and generations.
In an exclusive interview, Zhao emphasized that while technology reshapes how stories are shared, it cannot replace literature’s core purpose: As long as human nature exists, as long as our longing for beauty and truth endures, literature will not die.
The Shanghai-based poet and essayist argued that evolving formats – from ancient scrolls to e-books – only strengthen literature’s adaptability. What remains unchanged is our need to express ideas, share emotions, and connect minds through words, he noted, highlighting how contemporary Chinese authors are innovating while preserving cultural roots.
Zhao’s win comes amid growing global interest in Asian literary voices, with cross-cultural collaborations between Chinese and European publishers increasing 23% this year alone.
