China Commissions Advanced Fujian Aircraft Carrier with Xi Jinping Onsite

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Xi Jinping presided over the historic commissioning of China's Fujian aircraft carrier on Wednesday, marking a milestone in the nation's naval modernization. The ceremony, held at a naval port in Sanya city in Hainan Province, included a flag-presenting ritual symbolizing the vessel's operational readiness.

The Fujian – China's first domestically developed carrier featuring electromagnetic catapults – represents a technological leap, enabling more efficient aircraft launches compared to older systems. Xi, who also serves as chairman of the Central Military Commission, inspected the vessel's advanced facilities and met with personnel during the event.

Launched in June 2022 and named after Fujian Province opposite the Taiwan Strait, the carrier completed its maiden sea trials in May 2024. Analysts suggest its capabilities could reshape regional maritime security dynamics while supporting China's coastal defense strategy.

"This achievement reflects our commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and promoting peace through innovation," Xi stated during the ceremony.
