Organizers of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics unveiled plans for an opening ceremony celebrating Italy's cultural legacy and the unifying power of the Games during a press conference in Milan. The event, set for February 6 at the iconic San Siro Stadium, will center on the theme "harmony," blending art, history, and human connection.
Maria-Laura Iascone, Director of Ceremonies, described the vision as a "collective experience" showcasing Italy's artistic and social traditions. "'Armonia' intertwines diverse languages into a shared story," she said, emphasizing the ceremony's focus on inclusivity and innovation.
A tribute to late fashion icon Giorgio Armani, whose global influence shaped Italian design, will highlight the program. The Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation confirmed the ceremony will avoid a single centralized stage, instead utilizing the stadium's full space to engage audiences worldwide.
With over 2,500 athletes from 90+ countries and regions expected, the event marks Italy's first Winter Olympics since 2006. Organizers stressed sustainability commitments, including repurposing existing venues like Cortina d’Ampezzo’s historic sliding track.
