Chinese travelers planning trans-Tasman adventures will soon enjoy smoother journeys, as New Zealand introduces a visa waiver trial for those arriving from Australia. Starting November 3, Chinese passport holders with valid Australian visas can visit New Zealand for up to three months using only a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).
The move aims to capitalize on the growing appeal of dual-destination trips. Tourism New Zealand highlights that Chinese visitors spent 1.24 billion NZ dollars ($747.8 million) in the fiscal year ending March 2025, while Australia saw 9.2 billion Australian dollars ($5.99 billion) in Chinese tourism expenditure during the same period.
Industry analysts predict the streamlined process will boost regional tourism collaboration under APEC frameworks. 'This policy bridges two key markets,' said Auckland-based travel consultant Mei Lin. 'Travelers can now seamlessly experience Australia’s urban energy and New Zealand’s Māori cultural heritage without bureaucratic hurdles.'
The trial aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Asia-Pacific economic ties, offering new opportunities for hospitality businesses and adventure tourism operators across both countries.
