In a remote village on the Chinese mainland, an unlikely entrepreneur is redefining rural commerce through creativity and digital savvy. Zhan Yun, a farmer known online as "Tuo Feifei" (Flying Ostriches), has turned her ostrich farm into an e-commerce sensation by livestreaming on Douyin – China’s leading short-video platform.
Using smartphones rigged with socks and elastic bands, Yun showcases her feather dusters while her ostriches playfully peck at cabbage heads. This quirky approach has captivated 720,000 followers, enabling her to sell 5,000 feather dusters daily. Her success highlights how grassroots innovation is driving rural revitalization, a key national priority.
Beyond sales, Yun’s venture has created 50 local jobs, primarily for women, blending economic empowerment with community development. "Social media lets us share our story with the world," she says, embodying the spirit of China’s digitally connected countryside.
